Intensive Figure Drawing and Painting

This course is a full time immersion in figure drawing and painting with intensive training by Director Kevin McEvoy.  Running five days a week for three hours each day, each class will feature both a long pose which spans several weeks, and shorter poses for quicker gestural studies.  In the vein of the 19th century ateliers, and in keeping with Kevin McEvoy’s training at a historic atelier in Europe, this course makes frequent use of the sight size approach to seeing.  As sound drawing is the basis of painting and sculpture, heavy emphasis is placed on drawing the figure, identifying external contour, and the accurate and rhythmic recording of shadow shapes.  Coupled together with time at the easel, this course offers detailed lessons in structural and comparative anatomy, tailored for artistic purposes, as espoused in Robert Beverly Hale’s teachings.  Each week features two days of intensive instruction, with three days reserved for students to work alone at the easel- an important pairing in artistic development.  In keeping with the Atelier tradition, Kevin McEvoy will work alongside students and regularly produce both drawings and large scale paintings.

"Sight-size when properly understood is not a mere measuring technique, but a philosophy of seeing. Rather than focusing on detail, the student learns to observe the motif from a distance and convey the visual effect. Mastery of sight‑size leads to qualities of characterization and handling that are inherent to the technique.
