A welcome into the world of classical drawing and painting, this course, co-taught by Bill Graf and Kevin McEvoy, is designed to usher students through a sequential series of works, teaching them the basics of how to draw in the "Sight Size" tradition. Beginning with graphite, progressing on to charcoal, and finally arriving at oil painting, students learn the most important concepts and lay the foundation for seeing.
Working from a live model, students learn to draw and paint portraits. Building upon principles which were established in plaster cast drawing and painting, great emphasis is placed on accuracy of shapes, mixing flesh tones, and capturing the sitter's personality.
In the event that the model is sick and cannot attend a class then the student works on a still life study or anatomical study for that class.
All live portrait models are booked by the students through the use of an independent modeling agency, click here for Vidal Model Bookings
A note on how portrait model pricing works: For an 8 week semester there is a portrait model fee of $140. This fee covers 7 sessions with the model paying both the models wage and the model agency's fee. The Atelier at Flowerfield does not profit from providing the portrait models in any way. We provide this service as a convenience to the student so that they can enjoy painting from life. Beyond this fee the Atelier also pays for one modeling session per semester for the student in the event that a class is cancelled or a model does not show up one week. So in essence, the student gets one week of with a portrait model for free if the model comes for the full session of classes.
After taking one full semester of the portrait class, and the student understands how the portrait modelling works, the student then has the choice to work with a partner and hire their own model outside of the Atelier. Please contact administration if you are interested in hiring a model separatly from the Atelier.
