Lecture: Sketching and Poetry
Speaker: Brad Davis
On Thursday night we hosted an interactive lecture and reading, in which award-winning poet Brad Davis described the compositional process that has guided most of his work since the turn of the millennium, a process attentive to four horizons: oneself, one’s surroundings, the Mystery, and language (words, the image, the sentence, the line break, sense and nonsense).
We had a great turnout at the Summerworks 2017: Masterworks opening reception last week. We celebrated works by Lana Ballot, Christian White, Bill Graff, John Traynor, Kevin McEvoy, Donna Grossman, and Gwen Marcus. The exhibit will be up through November 30th.

Leeanna has been teaching on Long Island's North Shore for almost ten years. She specializes in classical drawing and painting. While studying with Robert Armetta she worked as the school's Youth Director and created Long Island's first classical art program for young artists. Leeanna also taught Advanced Drawing at the Long Island High School of the Arts in Syosset, NY where she helped numerous high school students get accepted to art colleges nationwide. She specializes in portfolio development. In addition to teaching young artists Leeanna developed a unique Fundamentals program designed for the absolute beginner adult student. Later Leeanna brought her program to The Teaching Studios of Art in Oyster Bay which proved very successful. In this workshop James instructed students through working from a live model, building character sheets, writing a script and executing up to 9 finished panels.

The Atelier at Flowerfield is pleased to announce that our student Lewis Sawatzky has spent this month in Italy sipping espresso, sampling prosciutto, swirling Chianti, and doing a bit of drawing and painting.
Lewis Sawatzky painting from life at the easel.
Lewis is the second student in our foreign exchange program with the Charles Cecil Studios of Florence, Italy. This one-month program is an intensive immersion in Classical Portrait Drawing and Painting Studies for eight hours a day. Lewis reports that his studies at the Atelier at Flowerfield prepared him well for this intensive study.
Our Director Kevin McEvoy studied for several years at the The Charles Cecil Studios, a private atelier in Florence, Italy run by American painter and art historian Charles H. Cecil, who was trained by R. H. Ives Gammell. Offering training in classical techniques of drawing and oil painting, this Florentine art studio occupies the most historic Florentine atelier still in active use. The curriculum stems directly from the leading ateliers of nineteenth-century Paris. Fundamental to the teaching is the practice of drawing and painting from life. Another important practice is the sight-size technique whereby subject and image are depicted to scale as seen from a given distance.
Our Fall 2017 Semester is Open for Enrollment
Take advantage of this opportunity for early enrollment to guaruntee a spot in the course of your choice!
